Sarek Shields had an impressive amateur run, scoring five finishes and capturing an amateur middleweight title. A former regional welterweight champion, Shields, a striking specialist, enters tonight with five wins in his last six. Shields was victorious in his PFL debut in June, defeating Joseph Luciano.
Nick Meck was an NAIA All-American wrestler at York College before joining professional MMA in 2021. A wrestling specialist and former regional welterweight champion, Meck made his PFL debut last year in a loss to Kevin Pease. He’s won two straight since, however, including a first-round submission of Alan Dominguez in a showcase bout this past June.
Who will come out on top in this welterweight battle?
Round 1
Shields and Meck show respect in the center. Right hand and a takedown attempt by Shields. He manages to get Meck down quickly. He quickly searches for a guillotine. Meck tries to slow things down, but Shields still has the arm under the neck. Shields gets it deeper while he flattens into guard. Meck picks him up and shakes it off. Shields gets an arm around one of Meck’s arms in a kimura trap, essentially nullifying his offense.
After a bit of time, Meck circles to the back with Shields back on his feet, landing a shot. Shields pushes Meck toward the fence, but Meck sprawls on the takedown attempt. Meck uses his hands to punch at both sides of the upstairs of Shields. Shields builds up and we got a body lock. A couple of knees in the clinch by Shields before the fight returns to the ground. Shields is on his back, but Meck is bleeding from the knees that landed. Shields is looking for another guillotine attempt, now with his guard around Meck and seated up against the fence. Some body shots from Meck. Meck gets hooks in, but Shields reverses and gets on top. Meck reverses himself, however, shaking Shields off and getting back on top, where he ends the round.
Between rounds, the doctor takes one look at the cut on Meck’s eyebrow and calls it! The blood is continuing to pour even as Meck is being worked on. Gruesome!
This one ends on the stool.
